Yancey County's Public Works Department includes three areas: Convenience / Recycling Centers, the Transfer Station, and Facility and Grounds Maintenance.
Convenience / Recycling Centers
The Public Works Department provides six convenience centers to collect the County's residential solid waste and recyclables. The convenience centers are located at various locations throughout the county. See the addresses and phone numbers of the convenience centers.
All six of the centers are open Monday through Saturday from 7 am until 7 pm.
Each of the centers takes bagged household waste in addition to recycling newspapers, cardboard, aluminum cans, glass containers, and plastic. Used motor oil and tires are accepted at the East Yancey / Burnsville Center.
Residents can also use containers located at the Yancey-Mitchell Transfer Station.
Transfer Station
The Yancey-Mitchell Transfer Station is located off NC Highway 80 North, on Landfill Road. The Transfer Station is open Monday through Friday, 8 am until 4 pm, and Saturday 8 am until noon.
Yancey-Mitchell Transfer Station accepts solid waste from the County's industries, from municipal and County waste collection facilities, and from Yancey and Mitchell County residents. Yancey County manages the operations of the Transfer Station according to a joint agreement with Mitchell County.
From the Transfer Station, the solid waste is loaded into trailers and hauled to an approved landfill in Blountville, Tennessee area for disposal. The Transfer Station also operates a scrap metals and white goods recycling facility.
Also located at the Transfer Station is the award-winning, Energy Xchange Project. This is a non-profit business incubator utilizing methane gas produced from the closed solid waste landfill. Yancey County was awarded a U.S. Department of Energy Grant in 2008 for the retrofitting of the existing EnergyXchange operations and additional green energy programming.
Facility & Grounds Maintenance
The Yancey County Maintenance Department has the responsibility of maintaining all County-owned buildings and grounds.
