Yancey County Passes Resolution asking that the Honor and Remember Flag be Official National Symbol

At their January meeting the Yancey County Commissioners proudly passed a resolution asking the United States Congress to recognize the Honor and Remember Flag as an official symbol of our country. The Honor and Remember Flag Campaign advocates the establishment of a flag to remember the more than 1 million lives that have been lost in service to the United States. At the meeting, U.S. Army Sgt. Josh O'Conner and Ms. Jan Banks presented an engraved Honor and Remember Flag to the family of Sgt. Kevin Akins. Sgt. Akins, a Yancey County resident, was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan on March 12, 2006. Commission Chairman Walter Savage stated, upon the passage of the resolution, "This touches me personally as I lost two crew members in April of 1965 in Vietnam. This is a good thing that you folks are doing." To learn more about the Honor and Remember Flag Campaign visit the website, www.Honorand Remember.org.
