Sheriff’s Department

The Yancey County Sheriff is an elected constitutional officer responsible for enforcing the laws of North Carolina and Yancey County.

Deputies are responsible for the service of criminal and civil papers, including warrants and summons to those persons called to testify. Deputies are also responsible for court security. A deputy is posted in the courtroom during court cases to provide security for court personnel and the public.

The Sheriff is also responsible for maintaining the county jail.  The current jail is located on the basement level of the County Courthouse. The facility houses persons awaiting trial, persons convicted of short sentences, as well as persons convicted of crimes awaiting transport to the N.C. Department of Correction. For information about a specific detainee, contact the staff at the Yancey County Detention Center.
